This has been an exceptionally busy week - the Quilters Quest (shop hop) has been running from this past Wednesday through today. (whew!) 'Hot and cold running people!' as my ex-partner used to say. :)
Today I decided to hide out in my office and sew a bit while it was quiet (between waves of customers). I signed up for an online class with Carole Weber of NZ called 'the road to my house' but have been only able to watch other people working and read/watch the lessons as I have been so busy preparing for Quest. So, today I started sewing.
Of course, I never do anything quite the exact same way the teacher proposed. :) Carole used dried tea bags from her daily cuppas to make the background fabric for her quilt. Since I don't drink hot things, I haven't decided yet what I will use for my foundation ... but I did use some tea bags to dye muslin for my picture squares - including some wonderful Blackberry Tea that dyed things purple. :)
The idea is to free motion quilt/embroider small vignettes of your home/neighborhood. Now, I _love_ doing free motion work, so this part was way fun (except for the really small part - gotta watch for finger damages:). Here are some of the bits I made today, using tea dyed muslin and scraps of cotton batting. Bear in mind that I'm not a particularly good drawer, so the designs are kind of crude. :)
My little dog (now passed) and our house.
The Dasher Green logo (our neighborhood - it is a sailboat as we have Lake Elkhorn), Dasher Green Elementary School where my children attended (and an attempt at the playground), and the local village center with the Giant grocery story, the Hair cuttery and bank.
The neighborhood High's (stop and go type of quick shop) and the Owen Brown Community Center, and the DG neighborhood swimming pool where we spent many happy hours when the kids were young.
I also did bits to show the shoreline of Lake Elkhorn with the swans and ducks, our bicycles that we used to ride regularly around the neighborhood and the lake, an aerial map of our cul-de-sac where the house stands, and so on.
This is only the first step of many to make the class project but I am very happy to have gotten a start!
:) Linda
PS OMG! I forgot the best part! These photos were taken with my new iPhone 4S camera! My husband bought me one for my birthday and we have a spiffy new account with Sprint. Gloriously happy with it! Siri is sweet. :)
