What kind of books do you like to read? Listen to? I consume books like snacks - I read pretty fast (average paperback book in less than one day, usually) and I LOVE to read. I have no idea how many books I've read in my life - started reading when I was about three years old. Last year I read about 170 books (retired, remember:). So, conservative estimate, maybe 75 a year on average (counting childhood which I mostly spent outdoors, college when I was buried in text books, and mothering-small-children years when one a week was likely a big deal).
Since I was about eight or so I have been a devoted reader of science fiction of all kinds - was a pretty indiscriminate reader as a child and very eclectic. I spent a lot of hours on Planet Linda (as my daughter calls my inner life:). As an adult, post-college, I particularly enjoyed science fantasy - dragons, elves, werewolves, etc. :) Did a pretty fair period of time deep in murder mysteries during my owning-the-quilt-store time (was really, really far away from my daily life:).
When the pandemic came, for whatever reason, I started to binge read romance novels. I've worked my way through the majority of Nora Roberts' books and all of J. D. Robb's (Nora's alter-ego)... Also, tough-but-white-hat character authors like Nick Petrie, Lee Child, Robert Ludlum, Robert Parker, etc. Fantasy romance (I do avoid vampires now since I finished Charlaine Harris's series) is often my 'drug' of choice. :)
What brings this to mind? I did some errands today (filled my bird feeders, gathered and took out the recycling, brought in the snail mail, made some appointments and dealt with some bills), went for a walk (the weather was GLORIOUS with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s) and spent most of the rest of today reading. Oh, I did cook supper with Hugh - spaghetti and meatsauce.
When I owned/operated my store (1999 to 2014), I found reading difficult. Well, reading real books - I could not withdraw from the book to deal with in-the-flesh real life easily. So, I started reading on devices - first a series of iPods then my iPhone. For whatever reason, I can turn a device off and go back to it easily. shrug. Also my books are way, way more portable in digital formats. I always have a book in my pocket and can whip one out to pass the time waiting for other things (microwave to ding, doctor's office appointments).
Reading and napping, two things that make it a great day for relaxation!
:) Linda
